About Dr. Stephen Camarata

Meet Dr. Camarata

Stephen Camarata, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a professor of Hearing and Speech Sciences and a Professor of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He also is a Special Education faculty member at Vanderbilt-Peabody College. Dr. Camarata is a nationally and internationally recognized expert on speech and language development and disorders and has published more than 100 articles and chapters on how to identify and treat speech and language disorders in people with disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, pediatric hearing loss, and cerebral palsy, as well as developmental speech (phonological) disorders.

Professor Camarata holds clinical certification by ASHA (CCC-SLP). He received a BA and MA from San Diego State University in Speech Pathology and a PhD in Audiology and Speech Sciences from Purdue University. He also completed Postdoctoral training at the University of Arizona. For more than 30 years, his research has been supported by NIH, IES, US Department of Education, and/or private foundations. As a clinician-scientist, he also serves examinees with disabilities at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center. He has taught graduate courses in speech development and phonetics and is a highly skilled phonetician who has experience transcribing typical and atypical speech in children and adults.
